Overview of the Term

This is a great year to be learning about Charles Dickens, as 2012 would have been his 200th birthday. You may have seen some TV and radio programmes, or even been to the Museum of London's Dickens Exhibition. Even if not, you will certainly be an expert by Christmas.

This term, you will be reading the short novel and undertaking some speaking and listening, reading and writing activities to build on your skills. You will be also revising and practising your use and knowledge of the English language, including grammar.

Check out this special Dickens 2012 website. Also, see the Dickens Fellowship website for background.

If you search for 'A Christmas Carol' on the Internet Movie database, you'll find 25 film versions of this classic tale, from 1914 to this year. So what it is that fascinates us about the story? Watch the most recent Disney trailer for clues...

Of course, you must make up your own mind. The best way is to read the text and decide for yourself.

  1. Dear Mrs William,
Would it be possible to exchange our mails? This is the reason why I am asking: I am a french teacher teaching english in Normandy. This year I have a bilingual pupil aged 10 and a half -year 7. I am working hard for her because I wish to teach her english the way she would be taught if she was still living in England. But I have no experience and need help.
I need a teacher like you to guide me.
    Thank you very much,
Isabelle Vallée, Collège Paul Harel, Rémalard, France
